Accessing healthcare and mental health services can be challenging for neurodivergent LGBTQ+ children and their families. To provide effective support to neurodivergent LGBTQ+ patients, healthcare professionals require an understanding of the unique needs and barriers faced by the members of this community, the discrimination they encounter, and the importance of inclusive and affirming care. Here are some strategies and resources that can help you find professionals to effectively address your family’s unique healthcare needs.

Finding Inclusive Healthcare and Mental Health Providers

Research and Referrals: Start by researching healthcare professionals and clinics known for their inclusivity and expertise in working with LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent populations. You may find appropriate referrals from community organizations, support groups, or online resources dedicated to LGBTQ+ and neurodiversity-affirming health. Websites such as the National Queer and Trans Therapists of Color Network and Psychology Today's therapist directory can provide additional assistance. If in-person services are not readily available, telehealth services may be an option for your family.

Ask Questions: When selecting a healthcare professional, ask about their experience with LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent patients. Learn more about their approach to care and any specialized training that they may have received. If they do not understand issues related to the neurodivergent LGBTQ+ experience, gauge if they are open to attending training or accessing resources to help them learn more.

Look for Affirming Practices: Choose healthcare professionals who demonstrate affirming practices, such as those who use inclusive language, ask for their patients’ pronouns, display LGBTQ+ affirming symbols and other materials, and ensure accessibility for neurodivergent children and their families.

Join Support Groups: Virtual or in-person support groups can provide a safe space for sharing experiences with others who understand the intersection of LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent identities. In addition to providing direct support for your family, these groups may also provide you with valuable referrals to inclusive healthcare professionals.

Utilizing Community Resources

Many organizations offer resources and support specifically for LGBTQ+ neurodivergent children and their families, including:

  • The Trevor Project: Provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ+ youth, including those who are neurodiverse

  • Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN): Offers resources and advocacy for autistic individuals, with a focus on intersectionality and inclusivity

  • PFLAG: Provides support, education, and advocacy for LGBTQ+ individuals and their families, including resources for neurodiverse members

Navigating healthcare and mental health services can be complex, but with the right strategies and resources, LGBTQ+ neurodivergent children and families can access the affirming care they deserve and build a supportive community in the process.
